Peritoneal cancers are those affecting the lining of the abdominal cavity—were once considered nearly impossible to treat effectively. But thanks to advances in surgical oncology, HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) now brings renewed hope. Combining precise tumour removal with heated cancer-killing therapy, this innovative treatment is changing patient outcomes, and our hospital is proud to offer it.
HIPEC is a highly specialised treatment for abdominal cancers. It combines:
This targeted method delivers a high concentration of chemotherapy precisely where it’s needed, helping to reduce side effects in the rest of the body.
During the procedure, once tumour removal is complete, the heated chemotherapy is circulated in the abdomen for 60 to 120 minutes using either a closed or open technique, depending on the case. The chemotherapy directly targets cancer cells left behind after surgery, boosting its effectiveness while limiting damage to healthy tissues. After treatment, the solution is drained, the abdominal cavity is rinsed, and the incision is closed. Patients are then transferred to ICU or recovery for close monitoring and personalised supportive care.
HIPEC is most effective for cancers limited to the peritoneal cavity. At our hospital, we treat:
Patients may benefit from HIPEC if their cancer hasn’t spread beyond the abdominal area and they are in overall good health to undergo surgery. Every individual is carefully evaluated through imaging, lab tests, and health assessments to determine whether this treatment is the right option. Our team takes the time to guide each patient through the process and ensure the approach is safe, personalised, and supportive.
Most patients stay in hospital for several days up to a week, followed by a recovery period at home of 4–6 weeks. During this time:
